The story of Porto

Granite, port and river

Porto is a city of granite and blue tiles, tumbling down to the Douro in a cascade of churches, balconies and red rooftops. It feels more intimate than Lisbon, and more rooted in craft: port wine, azulejos, silverwork and a serious culinary tradition.

Across the double-decker Dom Luís I bridge, the port lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia have aged the world's great fortified wines for centuries. A private tasting among the barrels is one of the great pleasures of a visit.

The city's luxury hotels reflect its character: wine-world landmarks overlooking the river, Belle Époque palaces on the Avenida dos Aliados and historic houses on pedestrian Rua das Flores.
