Where to stay in Portugal

Portugal packs extraordinary variety into a country you can cross in a few hours. The capital's palaces and rooftops sit half an hour from the royal Riviera of Cascais and the forested palaces of Sintra; Porto's granite streets lead straight into the terraced vineyards of the Douro.

South of Lisbon, the Alentejo's cork plains and the dunes of Comporta offer space and silence, while the Algarve's golden cliffs close the mainland. Out in the Atlantic, Madeira and the Azores add gardens, volcanoes and whales. Here is how to choose, and where to stay.

Seven hills, a wide silver river and palaces turned into some of Europe's most characterful hotels. Lisbon is where most of our journeys begin: grand on Avenida da Liberdade, romantic in Lapa, bohemian in Chiado and Príncipe Real.
