The story of Lisbon
The capital of light
Lisbon reveals itself slowly. Mornings begin with the clatter of a yellow tram climbing towards the castle, the smell of fresh pastéis de nata drifting from a pastelaria, and a light so clear that painters have travelled here for centuries just to catch it on the river.
By afternoon the city has shown you its many faces: the Pombaline grandeur of the Baixa, the tiled lanes of the Alfama, the boutiques and gardens of Príncipe Real, the Manueline stone of Belém where the age of discovery began. Each neighbourhood has its own pace and its own hotels, from Belle Époque palaces to hidden townhouses with only a handful of rooms.
Evenings belong to the miradouros, the viewpoints scattered over seven hills, and to dinner tables that range from Michelin-starred tasting menus to tiny tascas where a grilled sardine and a glass of vinho verde taste like the whole country. With a private driver, the hills disappear and Lisbon becomes effortless.
